CLARION -- Gerome P. "Romie" Haskell, 87, of Clarion, died Friday, February 22, 2008 , at Clarion Hospital . Born September 6, 1920 , in Clarion, he was the son of the late Walter S. and Alma Steele Haskell. In December of 1948, he married the former Marilyn Pergrim. She preceded him in death in 1985.
Mr. Haskell was co-owner of The Walter Haskell Furniture Mart at Rhea?s Corners, from which he retired in 1986. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church , and the American Legion in Clarion. He was a NASCAR fan, and a long time supporter of the Special Olympics and local Humane Society.
Mr. Haskell worked at the shipyards in Baltimore from 1939 to 1942. Because he was unable to pass the physicals for the U.S. Army, Navy or Marines, due to a bout with polio at age 13, he enlisted in the Merchant Marine as apprentice seaman in 1942 and was discharged in 1945 as an ensign, serving as third mate.
Upon graduation from Ft. Trumbull , Conn. , in 1945 he transferred to the Pacific. He was awarded the Atlantic , Mediterranean-Middle East, and Pacific war zone bars along with the combat bar with stars "for engagements in direct enemy action." Mr. Haskell also received honorable discharges from U.S. Naval Reserve and U.S. Coast Guard for "Oceangoing Service during the Period of Armed Conflict."
Mr. Haskell is survived by a daughter, Yvonne Haskell of Clarion; four grandchildren, Patrick Lawrence of Clarion, Michael Lawrence and his wife Loretta, of North Carolina , Samuel Lawrence and his wife Michele of Mississippi, and Kelly Dotterer and her husband Ed of Parker.
Also surviving are 12 great-grandchildren, Erin Moon and Rebecca Rishel of Williamsport, Michael and Zachary Lawrence of Virginia Beach, Va., Krysta Jackson of New Jersey, Justin Tordella of Texas, Patrick and Samantha Lawrence of Mississippi, Kayla and Kara Fulmer, Kasey McNany, Kaitlin Snyder, all of Parker and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
