Regine Haskell, 92, of Montclair, N.J., passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 18, 2020 – exactly as she hoped to do. Private funeral services have been entrusted to Shook's Cedar Grove Funeral Home, 486 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove, N.J. Memories and condolences may be shared at shookscedargrove.com.
Born in Paris, France to the late Joseph and Miriam Cohn, Regine moved at 20 years old to NYC in late 1947 where she shortly thereafter married the late Norman Haskell. She lived in NYC for 25-plus years before relocating to Houston, Texas then Florida and later settling in New Jersey.
Prior to retiring, she worked at Valentino, Gucci, the Cornell Club of New York in Manhattan and was a recognized & appreciated Maître D at the Houstonian where she had the honor of serving former President George H.W. Bush and former First Lady Barbara Bush. Having lost both of her parents before the age of 14, including her father in the Holocaust, and relocating at a young age without finishing her formal education, Regine overcame many obstacles throughout her lifetime and learned to endure despite the many difficulties she faced. She was strong and independent, determined to get ahead in life, and refused to let others dictate her way – nothing was too far out of reach. Regine was passionate about exercise & eating healthy (mostly!) minus her favorite coffee ice cream, homemade cakes and croissants! She loved spending many of her free hours in the gym (also for the socializing!) – and eventually when she could no longer go, she bought a Bo-flex for her one-bedroom apartment!
We can never forget her true love of shopping (Ross was her 2nd home) and her great sense of taste which was usually "spot on" and never old fashioned! She never lost the love of her French mother tongue – always singing a French song (Arrêtez Les Aiguilles) or coming with one of her famous French sayings such as, "si tu ne sens pas bien, bouge ton derrière" – which has changed the lives of so many people who knew her.
Most importantly though, Regine loved her family fiercely – there is nothing in the world that she would not do for them and she was always willing to give the shirt off her back. Nothing made her prouder than being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Regine - at the ripe young age of 83 met the love of her life – Bob – where for the first time she discovered what true happiness could really mean.
Regine was truly an incredible and special woman who will be loved and missed by all who knew her.
Predeceased by Joseph and Miriam Cohn, ex-husband Norman Haskell, and Bobby Asseo.
She is survived by her daughters, Sandy Petersen and Linda Christensen, 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Her ship has now docked in the harbor; she has gotten off and is ready for her next adventure – Oublie, Parti, Fini!!!!
