STONEHAM - William Edward Laivo, 87, of Stoneham died May 25, 2005 at Bridgton Hospital.
He was born in Hingham, MA, the son of John and Edith (Paijunen) Laivo. His family moved to Pembroke, MA when he was young and he spent most of his life there. He was a WW II Navy veteran serving on the battleship U.S.S. New Mexico during the battles of Leyte, Mindoro, Lingayen and Okinawa, also at the initial occupation of Japan. He was a shipyard worker and also foreman of cranberry bogs. He moved to Maine 35 years ago and enjoyed his family and friends, liked helping others, gardening, visiting his Finnish relatives and being a member of the Finnish American Heritage Society of Maine. He was predeceased by his wife Audrey (Wentzell ) Laivo in 1989 and a sister, Edith.
Mr. Laivo is survived by a daughter, Martha "Tooty" Wilson of Lovell; a son, William E. Laivo Jr. and his wife Janet of Hingham, MA; a grandson, Fred Wilson of Lovell; granddaughter, Faith Parsons of Norway; great-granddaughters Brittany, Chelsey, MaKayla and numerous relatives in Finland.
